11/22/2023 0 Comments Wrong version of there their theyreSo, the short of it is that these three little words that have similar (although not exact) pronunciations are often misused in writing, unnecessarily. This is why using the correct words in the correct place is essential to conveying your meaning. And by doing that, the rearrangement or addition of words severely altered the meaning of the sentence. In order to make the second transcribed sentence make any sense at all we had to put it in an acceptable grammatical structure. It’s still a mess and more importantly it COMPLETELY CHANGES the original meaning. The meeting that belongs to them (is at) that place over (where) they are. We could rearrange a few words and add a couple of new ones and it might look like this: The second sentence, however, is unintelligible as interpreted and a structural disaster. The first of these sentences makes perfect sense as directly transcribed. The meeting that belongs to them at that place friends over they are. Their meeting there friends over they’re.They are meeting the friends who belong to them over at that place. They’re meeting their friends over there. Then we can determine which sentence has actual syntactic meaning. Now that we have looked at what these similar sounding words really mean let’s take the sentences above and substitute the meanings for the words. If the word you’re using doesn’t mean ‘they are’ or if it’s not meant to show possession by a group, then go ahead and use ‘there’. For simplicity’s sake I’m going to give this easy rule of thumb for remembering when to write “there”: You will find about 10 uses for the word ‘there’ in the dictionary and while it does have different usages I often explain its meaning by saying it identifies location. It’s comfortable, it has several usages and the spelling is easy no tricky apostrophes or vowel blends to worry about. But it doesn’t always mean what you want it to mean. There: This word seems to be the fallback for some people when choosing the correct spelling. But if you remember that one of these three words shows possession, that something belongs to some people, then maybe this one will stand out as the odd one out and will become the “go to” for the plural possessive pronoun. It really doesn’t have any clues within it to help out with its meaning. Their: This might be the hardest of the three. So, when we write it we should remember that these two words need the apostrophe to show the reader that the intended meaning is ‘they are’. When we want to say ‘They are’, the words often run together and are verbally formed into the contraction, ‘they’re’. It sounds a bit like ‘their’ and ‘there’ but remember it’s two words that we brought together to create a one word sound. This is the sign that two words (they and are) have been brought together to contract (or shrink) into one word. It’s two words! The big give away is the apostrophe (‘) between the y and the -re. They’re I think this is the easiest to remember. At that point you should easily be able to understand the purpose and intent of the legible sentence and recognize the absurdity of the other. For now, I’ll leave sentences 1 and 2 without explanation but, instead, give clear explanations for the three words in both sentences. However, when written, they convey completely different meanings, in fact, one of them is utter nonsense. The sentences above, when spoken, sound very much the same and therefore the meaning is easily inferred by the person who hears it. Their meeting there friends over they’re. So, let’s find out exactly what they mean.ġ.They’re meeting their friends over there.Ģ. The key here is that, while these words do sound similar, they are in fact, three very different words with meanings that are nowhere near the same. But as soon as you put them on paper it can cast a shadow of confusion and doubt that leaves the reader responsible for sorting it all out. When you speak no one hears the apostrophe or the ‘eir’ in the words you say. But write them in the wrong way and your meaning can be completely misunderstood. There are three little words that sound a lot the same.
